We are measuring

How many different measuring words can you think of?

This term we are learning to measure everyday objects in a variety of ways.

Our first focus is on length.

The key idea when we played with the play dough was the comparison of objects. We placed them side by side and used measurement words such as longer, shorter, taller, tallest.

We were curious to see how many people had the same sized feet in our Room 3.
To discover the different sizes, we had to trace around our feet. This was one tricky job!

The second part of measuring is to understand that when comparing objects the unit being used (our interlocking cubes) must not change. We can't leave gaps or make overlaps or our result will not be true.

THERE IS A LOT TO REMEMBER WHEN WE ARE LEARNING TO MEASURE.

It is that time of the term again, where we recognise our tamariki and their efforts .

Congratulation to Liam and Kelly who received the Respect, Responsibility  and Resilience awards. This is for consistently using these Elm Park values.

Roman is our Principals Award recipient for this term. Roman has been working incredibly hard in Room 3.

Matariki Scientist's

Thanks to the wonderful help of Amelia's family, we were able to view the Matariki star cluster using specially designed star projectors.

Amelia explained to us how they were made:
1. We had to eat lots of food from cans.
2. When they are clean you have to make holes, but you have to be careful. Only an adult can make the holes! The holes are for the little light.
3. You have to glue the batteries on the outside with a hot glue gun. The batteries make the light work. You need to remember batteries don't last for ever.
4. The circuit board comes in the mail and it has a picture of Matariki stars in the proper places. You need my dad's special cellotape to make it stick on properly.
5. When you turn the can up, the green light goes on. It only works in the dark!

Below are photos of some very excited children enjoying using the Matariki Star projectors.
Science is fun!

A big thank you to Amelia's whanau for making Science come alive in Room 3!

Phonics Fun!

A huge part of learning to read is phonetic awareness.
Look at how we are building letters and making new words with Mrs Worsfold's lego.

Can you read these words and make the correct sound for these letters?

CELEBRATION TIME

It's time to celebrate Chloe, Ayra and Miesha (unfortunately absent)
